Hungarians cry out against new ”internet tax”

Furious with the plans to tax Internet data traffic, thousands of Hungarians took to the streets of Budapest to protect the freedom of the internet from the ‘anti-democratic’ law.

Tens of thousands urged the politicians to stop the plan that will make internet service providers (ISPs) pay 150 forints (4,50 SEK) for every gigabyte of data sent over their networks.

The Hungarian Association of IT, Telecommunications and Electronics Companies has already said the tax would force them to raise prices, Reuters reports.

A facebook group with 210.000 members said:

“The measure would impede equal access to the Internet, deepening the digital divide between Hungary’s lower economic groups, and limiting Internet access for cash-poor schools and universities,”
